The love that Joy shares with her new friends overflows from the church into the women’s homes and nearby restaurants where conversations over food and tea often end up in a time to pray for needs. Their needs are great, and these women are more than happy to receive prayer in Jesus’ name, just as they are thrilled to know someone like Joy who sincerely cares about them as individuals. These women face a lot, either as refugees, single Moms who are separated from their husbands or have been abandoned, or simply as recent arrivals who are trying to figure out their new life. They experience communication challenges, the confusion of survival in a new culture, the pain of injuries, trauma, the loss of loved ones, loneliness and isolation. They need a listening ear, which they’ve found in Joy. These relationships are the beginning of deeper and lasting friendships. It is the context in which Jesus and His love is already being shared, just as Arabic Bibles are being handed out.
There are many opportunities for churches to serve these families; furniture, household items, blankets, food, clothing, and diapers have all been a blessing for the women. The joy for volunteers from the churches has included both donating needed items, as well as delivering them to the homes where they could meet the family. Missionary Joy Markus is working on developing regular monthly programs for the women. Besides the existing English and sewing classes, Joy is setting up social teas, Middle Eastern cook offs, and other events which will allow the women to partake of activities on the lighter side. Through Joy’s caring spirit, her follow-up with these women by phone, and her generosity, a number of friendships are growing. If you would like to be part of the joy of sharing, of helping and of getting to know these women, please contact Joy Markus at 586-477-1530.
